You Only Die Once

As much controversy Freddie Gibbs’ causes from relationships, to his beef with Benny and other things. One statement is for certain. When Gibbs is focused, he is one of the best rappers on the planet. Returning with a follow up to the 2017 EP, You Only Live Twice, the Gary rapper shows us that very few can do this thing called rapping better than him.

While $$$ gave us a little bit of everything, Freddie sort of locks into what he does best and leaves some of the more high tempo songs in the vault. He really locks into that Cold Day in Hell pocket. One of the better songs on the album is gangsta rap twist of the Tony! Toni! Toné! song, Anniversary.

The production on this album is probably the biggest surprise to me, with several producers flexing their range like 454, who recently released his tape Casts of a Dreamer.

The album sounds fresh with the sturdy Gibbs delivery we all mostly love regardless of the subject matter he’s touching on. But, what I love about this album is Gibbs touches on his mortality and humanity more than usual. The last track of the album, he mentions several rappers who have passed, especially them being so young.

Freddie adds another solid album to his catalog that’s already deep and leaves fans wanting the long awaited Montana. Outside of obvious antics, it’s good to see him in the light for something other than controversy.
