Utopia: Travis bounces back…but, where’s the catch?
After one of the biggest catastrophes in music, there was a wonder what Travis Scott would do. With about a 5 year wait for the follow up to Astrowrold, Travis Scott finally releases Utopia.
First, let me start off by saying that Travis is not alone in this, but, his ability to curate is at such a great level, it tends to make his lack of rapping and substance stand out. No one is expecting Travis to write a entire thesis on these albums, but I cannot remember the last memorable line from him. Seriously. But, at the same time, he’s in such a interesting position due to him making up for it in stage presence and making every single album of his a listening experience. Now, whether that experience is good or not is up to you.
Utopia provides a feeling that so many rap listeners have been longing for in the mainstream drought of variety. Although, there are some usual names for features on this album, there are some pleasant surprises that help reinforce what Travis’ draw is. I love going into album and not being able to predict what I hear or how they will be used.
I think this sort of plays into what a superstar is or what traits they have in common. They make listening to albums much more of an experience..even if you do not necessarily like the music. The draw to your music being some form of unpredictability is something very few people have.
I don’t really take anything away from this album in terms of writing. But, looking for Travis to give you compelling writing is setting yourself up. But, it also shouldn’t be a crime for someone to give you something to remember from you especially if it’s YOUR album. To me, Travis has gotten worse and worse in this aspect as time has gone on. But, I understand the trade off.
After one of the biggest tragedies in a music setting we’ve seen. It’s honestly surprising that one of raps biggest stars is back. After people have been beginning for a rap superstar to come and ‘’save hip-hop’’ which I think is a dramatic notion, it let’s me confirm my thoughts. The people want more variety and there’s nothing wrong with that. It also let’s me know that the bar to clear is kind of low. And lastly, that in 2023, the initiative is in the listener’s hand.
